Mentors
Needed!
Who? Baobab Leadership Initiative is currently looking for
dedicated and passionate individuals to serve as mentors to New Orleans High
School Students who will be part of a unique program which will build
leadership skills among New Orleans area youth. Selected students will
participate and lead various domestic activities such as fundraising events,
team builders and cultural seminars, and then travel to Ghana to experience a
different culture and conduct a service-learning project in the summer of
2010.
How would I be involved? Each student that is selected will
be assigned one mentor who will assist them and support them through the
domestic components of the trip. This may include help with research
activities, planning fundraising events, transportation and assistance with
obtaining logistical requirements like passports and visas. Overseas travel to
Ghana would be optional for each mentor and at the expense of the mentor his or
herself.
What kind of commitment is involved? Mentors should
expect to dedicate approximately 2 hr/week to Baobab Leadership Initiative
Activities 3x/mo., with some longer Saturday events. Domestic programs
will take place starting in November and meetings will be held on a revolving
basis after school and on some Saturdays. (For example, meetings may take
place on Tuesday of one week, then no meeting the next week, then Wednesday of
the following week and then Saturday the next week.) Week day meetings
will take place from 6-8pm and Saturday events and times may vary.
Please note: It is very
important that mentors who commit to being involved with Baobab Leadership
Initiative commit to being involved for the entire year. We want to be
there for our students!
How do I apply? Visit our web site at www.baobableaders.org to download an
application. There will also be an information session for potential mentors to
find out more about our program at Massey's Outdoor Outfitters (509 N.
Carrollton, 70124) on Tuesday, October 6th from 7-8pm.
Completed applications are due by Friday, October 9th and can be
emailed to BaobabLeadershipInitiative@gmail.com.
